Aerosmith was formed in 1970, by friends Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry, drummer Joey Kramer, bassist Tom Hamilton, and guitarist Ray Tabano. In 1973, Aerosmith, their debut album, was released. Their first two albums had minimal success under the label Columbia Records buy their third album, Toys in the Attic, exploded the band onto the national scene. The band began selling more and more concert tickets to larger and larger venues across the country.
During the 70’s the band was on a role releasing crowd favorites “Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” As successful as the 70’s was the 80’s brought hard times for the group. Guitarist Brad Whitford left the band, Joe Perry left the band over arguments with Tyler, and drugs were tearing the band apart.
In 1984, both Perry and Whitford rejoined the band, and all the members entered rehab to battle their drug addictions. In 1987, the band released Permanent Vacation which put the top selling rock band back on the charts. Next up were the albums, Pump (1989) and Get a Grip (1993). All three albums combined sold almost 20 million copies. The three albums also produced several smash hit singles, including “Amazing,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Angel,” “Love in an Elevator,” and “Janie’s Got a Gun.”
Since the those times the band has retained their popularity but has not had nearly the success in the studio. In the late nineties, the band released the hit single, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” which rose to #1 on the charts. Also, Steven Tyler has tried his hand as a solo artist in the country music genre and Joe Perry plays with many bands as a guest musician from time to time.
