In 2000, Kings of Leon was formed with brothers Jared, Caleb, Nathan, and cousin Matthew Floodwill. The guys moved to Nashville in order pursue a music career. Their father, Leon, was a traveling preacher for the United Pentecostal Church, and the brothers were largely home-schooled. Forbidden to listen to secular music, the brothers did not find their musical influences until they moved to Nashville, where they met songwriter and producer Angelo Petraglia. The band’s early music was a blend of Southern rock and blues, but it has gradually expanded throughout the years to include a variety of genres and a more alternative, arena rock sound.

The first KOL studio album, Youth and Young Manhood, created an extremely large fan base in Europe. The band began selling more and more concert tickets to bigger venues. Due to the success, their debut album got the band opening gigs for U2 and The Strokes. In April of 2007 KOL released Because of the Times and the album brought them the same success in the United States they had been receiving in Europe. Kings of Leon continued on its way to achieving domestic success with its fourth album, Only By The Night. National touring bands like Pearl Jam and solo artist like Bob Dylan began taking notice and booking them as opening bands and the group was on their way to super stardom.
